MANAGING IN A TRADE UNION ENVIRONMENT

“Managing in a Trade Union Environment” targets Human Resource Professionals, Managers, Supervisory Staff and Small Business Owners.

 

Objectives:

By the end of the programme, participants will be able to:

• Read and understand a Collective Agreement.

• Identify what is a code of discipline

• Follow the correct procedure for disciplining employees and thus avoid costly missteps.

• Create a working environment conducive to positive industrial relations.

• Outline both their role and the role of other parties in the unionized environment.

• Define a grievance and outline why the grievance procedure is important.

• Understand how to conduct a grievance hearing.

 

Participants will Learn:

• What is a Collective Agreement

• The substantive terms found within the agreement

• The importance of knowing the key areas addressed in the Collective agreement

• What employees can expect

• The Scope of the Collective Agreement- i.e. the sections will be included, e.g. bargaining units, grievance procedures, code of discipline, management rights and responsibilities and union rights and responsibilities.

 

Receive an introduction to positive discipline where you:

• Identify the duties and responsibilities of the employer and the employee

• Know what is positive discipline and the essential features of a disciplinary process

• Know the key elements of a Code of Discipline and the importance of following protocol

• Understand the importance of documentation

• Understand the importance of consistency

• Learn what changes to your management style are necessary in order to manage effectively in the new unionized environment.

• Understand the possible consequences of not following the recommended approach to positive discipline Grievances

• Learn what is a Grievance

• Know the types of Grievances

• Learn what is a grievance procedure, why is it important

• Know how to conduct a grievance hearing

 

Methodology

The topics outlined will be presented using teaching techniques such as lectures/ interactive discussions, group activities, which will take the form of a case study/role play.
